  4. What is H-R Calc for Windows?
  5.  
  6.     Welcome to H-R Calc for Windows 2.00.   H-R Calc for Windows
  7.     is a tool that allowsthe user to derive a starÆs theoretical
  8.     radius given itÆs luminosity and spectral class (effective 
  9.     surface temperature).  This program is designed for educators, 
  10.     students of astronomy, amateur astronomers, and anyone wishing
  11.     to expand their understanding of the H-R Diagram and the relationship
  12.     between stellar luminosity, effective temperatures and stellar radii.  
  13.  
  14.     After installation, H-R Calc is fairly easy to use.  Double click the
  15.     H-R Calc icon to launch the application.  A screen with sliders, textboxes
  16.     and buttons appears.  The objective is to provide the application with
  17.     two variable parameters: stellar temperature and luminosity.  To enter
  18.     a stellar temperature you can either:

  20.         a.  use the textbox and enter a numeric value for the effective
  21.             surface temperature of the star you wish to model
  22.  
  23.         b.  use the slider to choose a temperature value
  24.  
  25.         c.  click on the spectral class button and choose a spectral class
  26.  
  27.         d.  click on the star's position on the H-R Diagram
  28.

  30.     To enter a luminosity you can either:
  31.  
  32.         a.  use the slider to select a luminosity value then click 
  33.                     on the enter button
  34.  
  35.         b.  enter a numeric value in the textbox provided
  36.  
  37.         c.  enter the star's absolute visual  magnitude in the
  38.             textbox under the heading "absolute visual magnitude"
  39.  
  40.         e.  click on the star's position on the H-R Diagram.

  42.     Each change made to either temperature or luminosity provides a new
  43.     scale model where the star's radius is compared to our sun's radius.
  44.     The "Scale Model" button is enabled for stars with radii greater than
  45.     7 solar radii.  Pressing this button shows how large the star is in
  46.     comparison to our solar system.

  48.     You may also import a star by clicking on the Import and Update Data button.

  51.         a.  click on the "Import and Update Data" 
  52.         b.  a listbox of actual stars is displayed
  53.         c.  double-click on a star name or press the Apply to H-R Calc to import the
  54.              star into H-R Calc.

  65.      H-R Calc consists of one installation disk.  To install follow these steps:

  67.     1.  From within Windows, run the SETUP program on Disk 1.

  69.     2.  Follow the instructions as prompted by the Setup program.

  75.     IBM Comaptible machine with 80286 processor or higher
  76.     A hard disk with at least 2.5 MB of free space
  77.     VGA or SVGA graphics display (SVGA Recommended)
